Hey all, I’m wondering: have you ever been able to grow an avocado plant from the pit/seed of a grocery store avocado? If so, what was the most effective method that you used?

Clean the seed and suspend the lower half in water using toothpicks until the root and stem grows out. There are many articles and videos describing the step by step details. It’s not difficult. Just change the water weekly and plant in soil when the roots and stems grow.

I tried the other method of soaking the pit and peeling off the thin brown layer. Then I wrapped it in some damp/wet kitchen paper towel, put it in a sealed plastic bag and left it in a dark place for a few weeks. Same results without the toothpicks.

One is in leca atm and I’m going to pot the other one in soil.
This is the first time I’ve tried this method.

I have a compost pile, and a couple years ago I noticed several avocado pits sprouting. Kinda odd, but they seemed to grow pretty well.

Of course, those other methods are more tried and true and are more sustainable indoors.

I tried the method Sunny described years ago and had a plant for a while but I ended up killing it somehow 😖

I’m not patient enough to go through with it. 😅

Did the toothpick method pre pandemic and ended up with 2 big plants. I wasn’t so good with plants back then so they ended up dying after a few years 🙁 but it was totally worth it and really fun!

This is my avocado plant (from seed) I've been nurturing for about a year and a half. She likes the outdoors better if it's warm enough, but we're still having cold snaps in middle TN. 🥑

Did you ever trim yours back?

I believe I have, but I probably need to again. Thanks for all the help and advice!
