# I got this plant back in November, and you can see the big healthy…

_Posted by AJ on 2024-05-15_

I got this plant back in November, and you can see the big healthy leaves from when I bought it. Since then the vine has continued growing but the leaves have been sporadic and very small in size. What am I doing wrong? Please help!

That’s a sign that it’s not getting enough light where it’s at. You’ll want to move it to better light or get a grow lamp.

I concur with Letsfindjoy.
Looks like light is needed.
\- What type of plant is this?
\- It’s difficult to tell, what is the size of that container that you have it in?

It looks like you have put some thought into the plant being a vine type of plant (I see the clear clips holding the vine.) Did you buy the plant in this container or buy the container separately and you planted it in the container?

I keep saying container, and not pot, because it is going to contain any and all water you put into it. So besides light, is the soil wet now? That container would be ok, maybe, for plants that need very little water. Less ruining of your walls too.

Okay so what I’m hearing is not enough light.

This is a shingle plant. The container is approx 6”, and there are no drainage holes as you point out. This was a concern of mine when I got this container, but I told myself to be cognizant of how much/often I water them to keep them from sitting in excess water. I repotted these plants in these ceramic containers after buying them at a local Home Depot. I try to make sure not to water the plants until the top layer of soil is dry - really trying to make sure the plants don’t sit in water with no drainage.

I think you got lucky with both plants and they lasted this long without drain holes. The soil had to dry more to avoid root rot and fungus.

I recommend changing to plastic pots with good drainage for both plants, this and the previous post. Use white ceramic pots to hold the plastic pots to maintain your aesthetics. Remove the plastic pots when watering.

Add grow lights so the plants can grow full size leaves.

Consider adding a flat board for the shingle plants to climb on.
