hello everyone! i am a beginner at taking care of plants. I have aloe vera and a snake plant in my room which are very low maintenance and I got this peacock plant to challenge myself and to take care of it. for context, I live in Southern California and it is near a west facing window, but not right in front of the window because I read that it doesn’t like direct sunlight. Humidity, I have always struggled with maintaining and providing humidity to plants. I previously owned a polkadot begonia, and it didn’t work out. For this peacock plant, I wanted to post and get feedback or advice on how to maintain the healthy. Should I place it in the bathroom overnight to increase humidity. We all shower here in the morning, so it can receive a lot more humidity in the morning.

I think you have a great plan for its care - placing it in the bathroom in the mornings is a great idea

Set up a humidity tray. She will love it!! Here is one of my begonias on a humidity tray. She’s very very happy. I bought a bag of small rocks at Home Depot. Rinsed them and put a layer of them in a clear glass dish that I thrifted just for this purpose. I filled it up with water until the rocks were covered completely. I put the plant in the middle of the bowl making sure that water doesn’t get sucked up into the plant. I used, in this instance, a drainage tray and only filled the water up to the top rim of the drainage tray. It works also with the plant in a cache pot on top of the rocks. Once the water evaporates to where the rocks are exposed to air, refill. The thicker the layer of stones, the less amount of times u will have to refill. This will work. I promise!! I also have a polka dot begonia, a Rex begonia, a red calathea and a regular polka dot plant on a humidity tray and they are thriving!! Good luck. 🫶🏼 I will find a few more pics a post in a few…

Definitely agree with Lisa on the humidity tray, and moving it to the bathroom isn’t a bad idea if your bathroom has a window that gives it some light (as in, you can move it there from time to time for humidity, but might not be the best long term solution if it doesn’t have a window). Another option would be placing the plant outside. A few of my higher humidity dependent plants became outdoor ones and enjoy the new spot, but granted, I live in southern PA, which is quite humid in the summer, so I can’t speak on the humidity levels you can work with in Southern CA. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Another solution would be adding a humidifier to your room and placing your plant near it, along with any other plants that need “misting” or have normal to high humidity needs. Placing plants with humidity needs together can also help with slightly increasing their humidity levels.

Also in case you don’t know: Calathea are very dramatic and very particular about their water. You’ll either want to add a water conditioner to tap water or use distilled water.

I use filtered but distilled/rain/natural spring would be best!

Another option once it’s a bit bigger is to pop it in a big pot and put LECA in the bottom, the LECA can absorb some of the water you give your plant and it helps keep the soil damp longer down at the bottom. That’s what I’ve done for mine and she is thriving. The LECA in my pot is right around where the too of the dark discoloration starts.
