Hi everyone, I have a dieffenbachia Camille. I got it as a rescue. I’m not exactly sure if this is healthy. It has grown a lot from when I originally got it. It literally had been about 2 inches tall. There’s always new leaves on it, but I’m not sure as to if the leaves are supposed to look like this? They’re rough. I thought they would be a little bit glossy. It’s doing well and growing, but I just need help because I think it might be sick. It looks like there’s a powder on the leaves, that’s why to me it’s not glossy. Is this normal looking? Thank you for all your help.

I’d say overall, your dieffenbachia looks healthy! I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a cultivar with glossy leaves, only matte, so that’s normal.

From the looks of it, the powdery stuff might be mineral buildup which won’t necessarily harm the plant, but you might consider wiping them off with a warm cloth. If it comes back, it could be powdery mildew which can be treated with a fungicide.

One thing I’d also suggest is giving it less light. Those top leaves are almost entirely variegated as a protective measure from the sun. Later on, it might have difficulty photosynthesizing. It’ll be better to give it some shade so it develops leaves with more green.

I’d say it looks good! Better than mine! Mine has never been that tall. All of the roots or stems are curly and above the dirt.

Mine looks the same and I’ve had a spider mite problem I’ve been treating for months

See I wonder if there’s not something with it. Were you getting anything such as, it looked like dirt was on the top of it not a lot but like maybe you were repotting and got some dirt on top of it if that makes sense? Because when I’ve brushed off the leaves , it comes back. And there’s no other plants around it that I would be spilling dirt on. I’m hoping it’s not any pest. Because it’s growing and thriving.

It’s so teeny tiny it looks like a spot of soil (at least that’s what I thought). You can use a magnifying glass or some people say transfer it to a white piece of paper to see if it moves. I think dumb canes might have a propensity for getting spider mites- I’ve seen posts like this before
