# Hey everyone! What are some beginner friendly plants that i should…

_Geplaatst door ki op 2025-05-06_

Hey everyone! What are some beginner friendly plants that i should pick up? So far i have a Satin Pothos, Golden Pothos, Snake Plant, Prayer Plant, and some kind of succulent (not sure exactly what it is). But, i’m looking for more plants to add to my collection! I adore plants! For reference, I only have one south-facing window in my house. I also have 2 cats \& a dog, so there are some plants that I won’t risk getting due to them being toxic to my animals. I currently have some that are toxic for my animals, but I keep them hanging from the ceiling where my animals are unable to reach them.
Thanks in advance!

Not really sure if monsteras are toxic or not but those are easy! I also have 2 cats and none of them touch it

I would LOVE to have a monstera. Unfortunately they are toxic to cats, but I may get one and just hang it from the ceiling with my other plants, so my cats are unable to reach it. Unfortunately one of my cats will try to eat every plant she comes into contact with lol

Haha well I hope u can find one all of my plants are toxic!

#### Melikeplants antwoordde op 2025-05-07

Well monsteras are technically toxic, due to the calcium oxalate crystals in them, they only cause irritation in the cats mouth. And in severe cases vomiting. But usually they will stop eating quickly because of the itchiness. I believe Pothos are just as toxic.

Perhaps you could try a monstera adonsonii in its trailing form; let it trail from a high up space? In reality though, Monstera are “toxic” due to causing slight discomfort in the maxillofacial region with a little consumption and, at worst, nausea/vomiting due to overdose. Not vet advice.

I have 6 dogs and 3 cats, and keep a lot of “toxic” plants.

You could try a ZZ plant! I believe they are relatively beginner friendly and non-toxic! They come in a variety of colors, some are really dark (Raven) and they have a nice growth pattern in my opinion!

#### Adri antwoordde op 2025-05-06

ZZs are also pretty tolerant of low-light spaces in case you don’t want to take up all of your window real estate. 🌿

I almost came home with a ZZ two days ago! Should have just got her!

#### Adri antwoordde op 2025-05-06

I think I’m going to get one soon too! OH and of course… Hoyas! Look into them. They’re not as common at big box stores but I have seen a few making the rounds at Home Depot/Lowe’s here and there. LOVE LOVE them. You can get different varieties online for good prices. The harder the leaf looks, the easier they are to keep and the less prone they are to pests. Good luck!!

Awesome, i’ll look into those as well!! Thank you! Good luck to you too! :)

Be mindful that ZZs are not pet safe so keep out of reach!

Also, I’ve heard prayer plants are not the easiest to keep, so be on the lookout with that one!

#### ki antwoordde op 2025-05-06

Yes, i’ve seen that they can be fairly dramatic \& prone to dying out so I’m trying my hardest with her!!

#### Victoria Maddison antwoordde op 2025-05-07

In my experience I’d say they’re kinda picky about humidity, and they’re also prone to spider mites so I’d keep a very close eye under the leaves and keep Dr bronners or neem oil on hand just in case. But I love the fact that they move their leaves every day, I’m considering getting another one soon.

#### Melikeplants antwoordde op 2025-05-07

I find the moving leaves quite annoying, I have to rotate the plant a couple times a day so the leaves aren’t all facing one direction (i use a grow light).

I love watching how their leaves move throughout the day too! They are a beautiful plant and so far I’ve been doing really well with mine!

Holiday cactus (Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) are super easy, have pretty flowers \& I believe all are considered pet safe. They also have the potential to grow quite large. My thanksgiving cactus lives in a 10” pot and looks like a small bush at this point! 😂
Air plants are also fun little weirdos who are pet safe. My Xerographica is one of my favorite plants! 🐱 🐶

#### ki antwoordde op 2025-05-06

Awesome, thank you so much! Will look into these plants!

#### ki antwoordde op 2025-05-06

Where do you find air plants? Those are so intriguing!

#### Ms.Issy antwoordde op 2025-05-06

I have had the best luck at local greenhouses/nurseries. I find they have the healthiest plants and the biggest variety of species.
I also believe that there are some air plant sellers on Etsy. I haven’t used this option myself so I don’t have any direct suggestions on them.
I have found YouTube to be a huge help with figuring out their care. The watering took a minute to figure out. But once I got the hang of that, mine has been one of my easiest plants.

Lowe’s and Home Depot are usually stocked with Air Plants, though usually in expensive/goofy pots; I printed this self-watering pot, but they really only need misting - there is only a little bit of decorative moss in there. I will forget about it for weeks, and it needs very little light.

I’m definitely going to look at Lowe’s or Home Depot soon! I’d like to add one or two to my collection!

Peace Lily is a very beginner plant, known as the "drama queen". But I believe she's toxic 😬. I just labeled everything off as "toxic". I have 3 little dogs and they've never even took a single glance at then. And my plant babies are everywhere in the house. I'm not sure about cats though. Njoy (Pothos family) is also good, but will be needing bright, indirect light because of its variegation. For succulents, I suggest Haworthias/Haworthiopsis kinds. Like Zebra and Little Warty. They are very low maintenance, tolerates low light conditions and good decorations. They're slow grower too, if you are OK with that.

#### PrettyLittleThings antwoordde op 2025-05-07

Grow lights are amazing when it comes to plant, you might want to consider investing on those 😀

#### ki antwoordde op 2025-05-07

I have been thinking about getting a Peace Lily and putting it up high on a shelf or in a hanging pot so my cats won’t be able to reach it. I know a lot of people have them \& they’re fairly easy to take care of, so that’s a big plus. My dog doesn’t bother any plants, but one of my cats can’t help herself! She ate all the tips off of my spider plant \& now i just try to keep all plants out of her reach, including ones that aren’t toxic. lol

I have been looking into getting a grow light, hoping I can pick one up very soon!

Here are some easy plants that are not toxic:
African violet
Hoya
Christmas or Easter Cactus

All orchids are non-toxic--I think phalaenopsis are incredibly easy but some disagree.

Someone above mentioned ZZ plant--that IS toxic. The ASPCA has a list of toxic and non-toxic plants.

### Jenna reageerde op 2025-05-07

Peperomias are easy plant, many options, and pet safe!

### Carter 🪴🎐☕️ reageerde op 2025-05-07

I second the peperomia recommendation— you could also do a spider plant or a pilea!

### Jenna reageerde op 2025-05-07

I use an app called plantin. You can scan any plant and it’ll identify it for you and tell you if it’s toxic. It will ask you to start a free trial but you can hit no and still use the app!

I have cats too, and I would definitely recommend hoyas as a good starter plant! Some good starter varieties are Hoya Carnosa, Hoya Kerii, Hoya Obavata, and Hoya Carnosa Compacta. I’ve seen a few of those at my local nurseries.
I saw some other recommendations for lilies but I know those could make pets seriously ill if ingested, so I wouldn’t recommend them.
Peperomias are also great with a lot of varieties, you just have to get their light right bc their leaves are so sensitive.
If you have a south facing window many succulents are non toxic and pretty easy to care for!
