Custom soil mixes?

Hi plant friends,

I want to mix a better more breathable soil for my plants because most of them are in regular indoor potting soil and are not absorbing moisture well. I invested in some perlite, orchid bark and sphagnum moss, but I’m really not sure the best ratio to mix together with potting soil. Any recommendations

I use chat gpt, tell it the plant I’m repotting, the soil and amendments I have on hand and ask it what the best recipe is for that plant. It gives ratios for each element. It’s pretty cool and has worked out very well for me.

I don't remember my ratio mixes 😅🙈 from last year but there are alot of YouTube videos that have the ratios for them. Not to sure about spaghnum moss though. I use that for propagations..

If I’m scared of the plant..I’m typically doing 1/2 “something” (plant-specific, like cactus mix, orchid bark, etc) + 1/4 all purpose soil + 1/4 perlite.
When in doubt, put in more perlite.

I’ve started using coco coir/chips, potting soil and either pumice or perlite and it has worked wonders.

Depending on the plant use different soil

I have mostly tropical plants, so I generally use 1/3 each potting soil, Perlite, and Orchid bark with some houseplant granules added in. It's worked for all my plants and I don't have to constantly change it up.
