# My banana plant has really compact soil from when I got it. I haven’t…

My banana plant has really compact soil from when I got it. I haven’t watered in two weeks and it’s still moist so I’m worried about root rot. I was planning to repot, but it’s putting out a new leaf. Should I wait to repot until the leaf is unfolded? It usually unfolds pretty quick. The roots that I can see from the drainage holes look good right now.
Thanks!

If it has root rot the roots will look slimy and weird maybe gross I haven’t delt with it before but that’s what I’ve heard

I don’t see any signs yet I’m just paranoid if it sits in the wet soil any longer I will start to

Does it look like it’s drying out or dying

I don’t think so. It’s putting out a new leaf. However I had to cut away a yellow leaf a few weeks ago that may have been from overwatering. And one leaf has this spot, which I am thinking could just be the way the leaf has been touching my lamp, maybe that one spot isn’t getting light because the other leaves look great

My experience with banana plants is that root rot is inevitable when learning to care for it. My advice is to Let the soil dry out completely before watering again. These plants are very fertile and they push out babies in the worst conditions. If/when it comes to watering again pull out the plant from its pot and check on the roots, if they’re mushy the plant will die from over watering and you learn from the mistake. I would extract the baby and replant it now. Hope that helps 🌿
