I want to start using rain water to water my indoor plants. I have a few questions though…

Will using rain water for the first time harm my plants?? I usually just use tap water.

Do I have to have a rain barrel ? Can I just get a pot or something and set it outside when it’s raining and then just water my plants with that?

I do believe both of those options are viable for using rain water but it depends on how much it rains in your area. The rain barrel shouldn’t generally run into any issues other than if you have anything that could pollute the water on the way down. Also, make sure you are checking for algae if you are getting a rain barrel. But if you are still worried about your plants adjusting to rain water it’s best to keep a closer eye on them. As for putting them outside, that can cause a few issues. You’d have to make sure you don’t overwater the plant. Also rain water has a pH of 5.6 and it would be a good idea to look into if that would affect your plants. That is what I could find about your question.

No problem I am also quite a beginner myself so I am not totally sure if I included all of the information about this subject but I hope that what I did gather was helpful enough lol

I wonder if you could buy a sturdy trash can and secure it in place it would work

That was the thought I had, and then just put a mesh top thing to go over it . I feel like it should be fine especially if I’m going to use that water the next day or so . I just wanted validation that it would be okay lol

Hi Brianne, I bought a 100 gallon rainwater barrel and adapter from Temu and it works amazingly! It’s currently full and I want to get another one, but maybe 200 gallons this time. There’s two spigots and the top has a 6” mesh hole on top. GAME CHANGER for your plants.

Areas with heavy air pollution may cause more harm than filtered or tap water. Check with your garden center or pool care shop. They have ph test kits and are knowledgeable on water conditioners plus the effects of the rain water in your area.
