# Anyone have a rope plant? I've had her for a LONG time and she only…

_Publicado por Bret el 2025-09-30_

Anyone have a rope plant? I've had her for a LONG time and she only recently put out those newer leaves and now I see she's putting out a couple more. Is there something I can do to make them grow larger or will they get bigger in time?

They are pretty slow growers but I'd suggest a soil refresh. That soil looks kinda crusty. I use a soilless mix of coco coir, coco chips, perlite, worm castings \& horticultural charcoal. Also, though they look like succulents these are Hoyas so I would water more frequently. Mine is under a grow light \& I water it (drench) about every 3 weeks (using my standard H20 mix which is water conditioner + half dropper of SuperThrive + half dropper of Prop Drops/per gallon). I've had mine since July and her stems have grown a lot. When I bought it the left side was level with the pot.

Gosh she's so pretty and big! I'm gonna have to get more specialized soils for my plants. I started out fast and strong so most of my plants(which vary from succulents to cacti to tropical) all have the same soils. And I'm starting to notice some REALLY don't like it hahaha

I totally get it. I was same. Went from 1 plant to 70 plants this year. I'm using that coco mix with everything except succulents \& my Alocasias (and a few Philos) which I have in 50/50 perlite/stratum. The coco mix dries out more quickly but doesn't get dusty dry like typical potting soil. You could throw in some peat to the mix too. Also a bit of stratum which helps w/pH. Happy growing!!!

I agree with changing the soil. I use a chunky mix with no peat moss for my hoyas. The first two photos are my DIY chunky mix for starter plants and cuttings. So, the particles are smaller. The last photo shows hoyas in chunky soil from two nurseries. The green bits are timed release fertilizer beads like Osmocote. Standard potting mix or container garden mix typically contains peat moss which holds too much water for a hoya leading to root rot. 🪴🍀

I agree with the suggestions about soil. But I wanted to add that mine also really likes sunlight.
I keep her about 1 foot back from a south window (I live in the north eastern United States); and she grows fairly quickly for me in that location.
And the baby leaves will get bigger, about the same size as her other leaves; they just take a while to size up and harden off 😃 🍃

I lucked out at a peddlers mall and found a hoya for $5. Unfortunately it also immediately root rotted. It's now trying to recover by water propagation (it turned out to be two separate root systems), but the poor thing has no leaves left. It was the fastest rot progression I've ever seen

I also agree about the soil refresh! I got mine recently and changed it into a chunkier soil mix as soon as I brought it home and have it hanging in a pretty sunny window and it’s growing great! These pictures are 16 days apart you can see how the little leaves end up getting bigger overtime
