# Question about species of plant. I bought it at Home Depot under the…

Question about species of plant. I bought it at Home Depot under the tag “assorted tropical” at first I assumed it was a philodendron cherry red. As all new leaves were bright red and older were green. Then the red turned burgundy, so I thought it was sun red. Then they turned basically black so maybe black cardinal??! I really need help.

hmm.. after tremendous research, I have decided that this is a red plant! Like not this red-♥️ but THIS red- ❤️. Also I think it’s HALLOWEEEEEEENNNB

Maybe Congo rojo?

I think Congo rojo is a good possibility. It could also be black cardinal which has darker leaves than the Congo rojo.

I’ve sorta ruled out rojo Congo as it doesn’t have the same leaf shape or stem shape. Also the transition from the red to almost blackish brown took around 2-3 months whereas the rojo Congo takes much shorter usually.I appreciate the suggestion though!

What about the petioles? Can you show a pic of them close up?

I noticed the red from the sun red philodendron is a lot more warm/oranigish, whereas this one has kinda all been more ruby/purplish

Looking good though I got one as a gift it was over watered so I had to repot it while it did it broke into two plants . Now I have two of them . They aren’t that happy yet I am learning about this plant it’s seems it might be a bit dramatic lol at least mine yours looks great

I think it’s a black cardinal. I only have a variegated one but here are pics of my imperial red and royal queen
