It was probably overwatered.  
It is not enough to wait for the soil to be fully dry to water because they will hold water in their rhizomes (the potato looking thing in the soil).  
I water mine in a 6” pot every 4 weeks or so, and will even hold off a few more days most of the time.

If you are going to repot or check the roots, it would not be a bad idea to put it in a chunkier mix to allow the plant to drain better. Or put it in a nursery pot of the same size as this one or 2” larger because they have more drainage holes.

thank you that was my thought exactly. I’ve been checking the soil with my meter and it says the soil is dry,
