Ive been slowly moving my collection to semi hydro but ive heard about people using self watering with soil. Does anyone have any experience? I would love to move my syngoniums and begonias into these setups but it sounds like a breeding ground for root rot to me.

The only way I keep begonias alive is with self watering pots, also use them for my ferns. You only put maybe a inch of water in them and I wait a few days before refilling

There are a couple kinds available. Most use a wick system. Others use a porous inner pot. I tried the second one about a year ago and it didn’t work out. It was even a plant that likes moisture. Currently I have switched over most Alocasias, a variegated white peace lily, and one other plant to semi hydro. They all seem to be doing very well. In fact better than in regular pot. Syngoniums I would be concerned because they like to dry out, but give it a try and see what happens. Begonias may be a better chance.
