# Can anyone please tell me why one side of my snake plant is losing…

_Publicado por Sarah el 2025-03-18_

Can anyone please tell me why one side of my snake plant is losing leaves (left side) while the other side is growing new pups and leaves? Is it too dry or over fertilized maybe? I follow the Planta schedule to water and fertilize. Disregard the lighting in this photo - it’s actually full sun plus a grow light but my camera isn’t reflecting that accurately.

Based on my experience I would guess that there are multiple plants in that pot and the plant on the left is smaller than the other and too dry. I can’t tell by the pic exactly but it does look like there’s a little more texture on the other plant maybe bc it is also dry? I had happened to me before where the plant will be actively dying and new pups are coming in. Would be curious if anyone knows the reason why that would happen.

They are curling too so thinking it’s too dry. Even though I follow the watering schedule we do have dehumidifiers in the house out of necessity so my plants dry quicker than is typical.

And yes, there are two plants in this pot. Perhaps they’re both competing for nutrition??

I should add I watered and fertilized this plant a few days ago and it quickly started wilting like this. The base of the leaf that’s hanging down is yellowish brown.

Maybe it’s in shock. The soil looks dry in the pic otherwise the alternative (overwatering) could also be true. Would you be up to unpotting it and check the roots and soil at the base? Either way looks like the larger plant is salvageable, but if it were me I’d move it to a smaller pot. I find my snake plants do better when they’re tight in the pot. Also theres less soil in that case to hold onto excess moisture.

Seems in a smaller pot it would tip over from being top heavy? Maybe I need a smaller diameter pot that’s deeper. These are honestly my hardest plants to grow lol.

If you can find a taller pot that would help. Mine are all in nursery pots inside of cover pots so I guess that gives them stability, but they’ve never toppled over on me before.

They’re tough because they’re easy 😂 I find when I pay too much attention to mine they die, if I ignore them, they thrive. But you can’t ignore too much! I have some hidden behind other plants and I have had to move a couple to the graveyard (🤫) so I have placed the others where I’ll walk past them so as to not completely forget about them, but I never water them when planta suggests.

I’ll try repotting it in a smaller and taller pot. I usually wait longer than planta says to water it so I can’t figure out what it wants as far as watering goes. Thanks for the input!!

I repotted the larger plant. And there was gray/white fuzz in the bottom of the soil. So I’m glad I repotted it. I’m watching the right leaf in this photo as it has a brown spot on it but the rest of the plant looked fine. I’m not watering it for a long time either lol.

That fuzz was probably mold, which is a good thing you removed it because it can become a problem.
Make sure your checking the soil is dry before watering as Planta says. Underwatering is better than Overwatering.
I would probably skip on fertilizer for a bit to give the plant time to settle before you push for production of new leaves.
What soil do you use?

I thought the soil was completely dry but evidently the last inch wasn’t quite yet. I don’t have a skewer to do that trick but I’ll wait even longer than I already do past the Planta recommendation to water.

I use a miracle gro soil that isn’t formulated to drain better for snake plants and topicals.

Another easy way to check is to lift the pot and when it is light, you know the soil is dry. So probably by going by how heavy the pot is today after the repot, that’s your sign when it’s completely dry.
