POV : Decided to plant queen palm tree also known as syagrus romazoffiana or jeriva . It’s native to South America , and it was introduced throughout as an ornamental tree. They may reach up to 60 ft tall .

I’m just about to hunt for 5 more and put them in a straight line.

This is a favorite palm of mine! So elegant. Unfortunately, the one in our family’s yard for about 20 years was killed by the disastrous winter freeze that took the Texas electrical grid to its knees a few years ago. Had to cut it down.

My advice is to give it a 4 ft diameter clearance to support future root growth because it spreads and forms a mound around the trunk as shown in my photo.

Hi Sunny, I totally remember that winter freeze you guys had! It was pretty bad. I have a question for you regarding my queen palm that I’ve named Herman. Herman was growing tall so I moved the palm to my front porch right under a hummingbird feeder. The birds loved the tall ferns as it created a perch for them. Well about two weeks ago, sunny socal California got hit with a heatwave and high humidity! Herman turned brown and crunchy over night and the birds stopped coming around. I did a full soak on Monday and again last night because the top soil looked dry. I noticed a new shoot this morning. Should I cut off all the dry crunchy ferns? I read somewhere that it will actually need some of that foliage for energy?
