I have this monstera. It’s stopped putting out leaves. This part seems to be getting bigger, like it wants to do something but can’t. It’s been months like this. Is it something about the coir post?

All ideas welcome!!

This looks like a Rhaphidophera? It wouldn't be the coir pole. Have you cut it back to that node before?

No. Did not cut. It’s like it truncated itself. It is putting out a long rootlet from that point.

Any ideas for a remedy?

So weird. I would maybe cut that first node off, and see if the previous node will shoot out more growth.

A few thoughts:

Agree that this looks like rhaphidophora tetrasperma, which is often falsely labeled as a monstera, but that honestly doesn’t change anything.

Depending on when it was last repotted, it could be that. They don’t like to grow as much until they’ve really filled their containers with roots, so it might be growing a lot, just in roots instead of foliage.

If it’s winter where you are, that’s probably playing a role. This plant will grow best at 75-80 F and will grow much more slowly below 70 F. I’ve also found that even plants with warmth and grow lights will slow down a lot when it’s winter outside. So if that’s you, consider moving to a warmer spot and also just give it at least a couple months before you worry.

If you don’t usually fertilize and the plant has been in that same pot a while, you could try some light fertilizer. But if it’s not getting as much warmth and light as it wants then it won’t be able to use the fertilizer well.

Our vision evolved to detect and enhance contrast, not to see absolute brightness. Plants, in contrast, work on the absolute light levels. This is important because a spot with 400 fc and a spot with 40 fc can seem very similarly bright to us, but one will give good growth and the other will kill your plant. If there isn’t a grow light, imagine that you are the upper surface of the leaves and think about whether you can see sky from where they are. If the answer is no, you’ll likely see a growth benefit with more light. Shoot for a spot within 3-4’ of a window and in the direct visual path of sky. The closer to the window the better.
