# Got these cuttings back in September rescued from rotting in muddy…

_Publicado por Drea el 2026-03-19_

Got these cuttings back in September rescued from rotting in muddy water. Once the roots were nice and healthy I potted in soil.. they almost died. I put them back in water almost 2 months ago and are thriving. I’m so scared to put them back in soil, but everything I read says they won’t survive long term in water.. Also, how would I even pot these..? Send help PLS!

What kind of soil did you use and did you keep them pretty moist?

I used a mix of tropical and indoor soil, extra perlite and coco coir. I did try and keep them moist but I’m still pretty new to plants and was afraid of root rot. I think I have my watering mostly down now but I just don’t know how I would even pot these cuttings

I’ve found with some propagations when transferring to soil you need to either already have the desired substrate “pre fertilized” or as soon as you pot give it a fist good watering with fertilizer! I believe that this gives the plant enough nutrients for improved root growth!

Also good to give as much light as possible during this period, a grow light is what I’d recommend along with the best spot in the house🫶🏼

I guess I’m more wondering if I pot the cuttings as wholes as they have multiple growth points do I cut them before potting or pot as a whole with the lower growths under the soil..? Will it rot those leaves?

if you're planting in a way that some leaves end up under the soil, yes, cut them off. they will absolutely rot. however, whoever told you they can't live in water long term was VERY wrong lmfao. plants can survive in water indefinitely as long as you keep the water clean and use liquid fertilizer. you can also convert to semi-hydro with leca. syngoniums are very popular hydroponic plants. don't stress about transplanting it, you don't have to transplant at all.
