# Help! Any recommendations for dealing with gnats? 😩 I have a feeling…

Help! Any recommendations for dealing with gnats? 😩 I have a feeling that all my plants have them (some more than others) and my house is full of these freaking annoying little flies….. I’m already using the stickers, but has anyone used Neem Oil? Does it work? 🤞🏻 thanks!

I’ll give you a fast rundown of gnats lol, (always a common problem during the winter months when people are watering more than they should but the plants aren’t growing as much as the summer and so they aren’t drinking as much)

•A soil mixture with very little peat or not at all, more aeration  
•Pots that provide proper airflow, nursery pots with more than one hole or terracotta  
•airflow in the room, ceiling fans or clip on fans  
•potting plants close to the top of the pot, so it’s not sitting too low in the pot and airflow isn’t getting to it  
•do not water till soil is dry, about 3/4 the way down for most plants  
•mosquito bits watered in whenever you water  
•beneficial nematodes watered in at same time  
•plug in bug zappers  
•some people say hydrogen peroxide helps too  
•if the infestation is really bad, I’d recommend a deep repot and clean of all pots, throw out all old soil and repot with clean roots and new soil and cleaned sterilized pots

When I had bad gnat problems, I used Arbor Bio Insecticide every watering. Now I use it once a month-ish as a preventative

apple cider vinegar or hydrogen peroxide.

usually the problem is that your soil is staying too wet. this can be remedied by either increasing airflow (leave fans on, and windows open when it’s warm) or repotting your plants with a coarse and aerated media. i like sol soil’s mixes. pesticides may help the infestation but gnats are typically only a symptom of the problem.

I had the saaame darn problem. I have tried everything. It got so bad that I ended up doing alcohol, water and a dab of dish soap. And I closed my curtains to avoid burning them any further with the sun. It’s been 3 days and I haven’t seen a fly since BUT I do not know the health of my plants just yet. They all look healthy and still thriving. No curling, burns but again girl I have no idea. I google it before hand. lol bc i had them swarming, idk if i can spray them again?? If anyone knows let US know but it helped for now. I spray them from the top and bottom.

Actually no. I'm a plant novice so maybe I did it wrong. But I was so desperate. I tried several different "natural" methods, had the little sticky traps. Nothing worked. I ordered neem oil. Sprayed the plants. We happened to be going away for a few days right after. Came home and haven't seen a gnat since.
