Just bought a new philodendron Brazil. This is my first time owning a philodendron and I am super excited and she looks so beautiful. If there’s any advice or tips that I should know so I can make sure that she thrives in my new home that would be great thank you!

Philodendrons are epiphytic, which means they don’t naturally grow in soil in their natural environment. Essentially, in order to survive as houseplants, they need a well-draining soil mix. I’d opt for an all-purpose potting mix with added perlite and orchid bark or an epiphytic or bromeliad mix when planning on repotting it.

I’m gonna guess from the Costa Farms tag that you bought this from Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart, or a grocery store, so I’d like to add some tips when it comes to getting a houseplant from a box store.
\- Check it for pests when you get home, even if you checked at the store. Spraying the leaves with insecticidal soap can help as a preventative measure or early treatment if any pests are hidden. You can spray the soil as well if anything’s possibly hidden in the soil. I’d quarantine it from any of the current plant collection for a month so any pests don’t spread to your other plants.
\- I’d wait a week or two for it to acclimate to the new environment and move to your home before repotting it, but you’ll probably find it needs a better draining soil mix than what it came in, and I’d give the roots a check for distress or rot during the repotting process.

Hope this helps!
