I need advice/help with a new plant that I rescued just yesterday.

She was looking pretty sad when I got her (pic 1) but I wanted to see if I could revive her… I watered her and she was looking well last night (pic 2) but then this morning when I checked her, pretty much all her leaves had fell off (pic 3)… and then when I turned her around, the remaining few just fell right off, so now I’m left with just a stem (pic 4).

Is it game over? Or can I bring her back to life? If I can, where do I even begin? She was so pretty before🥺

my experience with crotons is that this is game over 😫 they’re SO sensitive to their environment and just about any changes cause them to drop leaves.

Getting plants on their last leg is a good way to save money but when you bring it home, you need to pull it out of the pot rinse off all of the potting mix and then give it the soil that is required for that plant a lot of times the plants are poor because they’re not in the right mixture or they’ve been overwatered or underwater or whatever the case you just need to start from scratch and nurse it back to health

this is good advice in general, but crotons can be beautiful beasts and the fact that every leaf dropped in 24hrs…there was no hope for this gal

Something else is going on for it to drop all leaves in one day than just from being a croton. Last legged plants have a lower chance of surviving if professional growers can’t keep them healthy. Change of environment adds more stress especially changes in lighting and humidity. Traveling in vehicles in the summer that are hot, then, go cold on the drive home adds more stress to a plant. It can be a single or multiple reasons for dropping leaves.

I recommend checking the roots to see if they are still viable. If so, do not repot to avoid disturbing the roots and adding more trauma. Move to a location matching the light it had in the store. Crotons thrive in full sun (after acclimating) and do well in bright indirect light. You might need a grow light. Let the soil dry down between watering. Fertilize while the weather is still warm. 🍀🪴
