# Can anyone tell me why my tomato plant is yellowing ? Is it too…

Can anyone tell me why my tomato plant is yellowing ? Is it too crowded with 2 plants ? One is a beefsteak and other is a cherry tomato. It’s still pushing out tomatoes but the whole plant is yellowing, other plant is fine. This one produced first, I’ve gotten a lot of cherry tomatoes off it already but it’s been yellowing for a couple weeks now and I’m not noticing improvement. Should I be giving plant food every water ? I’ve given plant food, coffee grounds, banana water (not all at once) I don’t know what to do !

Probably those 100+ temps we were talking about. Tomatoes are heavy feeders so I use a slow release fertilizer for them every month. Mine also get yellow when it gets hot and I’m not keeping up with extra water. If you make your profile public, I can check out intervals and see if I notice anything you could try. I’m trying to remember to soak them every day. I wasn’t and mine got yellow and started dropping leaves. They are greening up again.

Mine are in a 7 gallon pot and are holding water better than the fabric pots I used to have. In years past, they would send out big tap roots through the fabric to get more water. I’m curious if they’ll do that this year or not. Since yours are sharing a container, I wonder if they can get enough water. Keep in mind they are sharing water and nutrients. I use this fertilizer.

If the entire leaf is yellow it’s nitrogen. Tomato plants are tricky cause you don’t want too much nitrogen or you’ll have problems down the road but not enough in the soil will cause this. If only some portion of the leaf is yellow and not the entire leaf it is most likely potassium and phosphorus are the culprit. Irregardless treatment is the same, you don’t want to try and correct it now because fertilizing a sick plant does more damage. I’m going to make a few assumptions, please forgive me. 1. You’ve used this soil before, possibly causing the soil to lack the needed nutrients. Solution: Amend the soil next year with home made fertilizers all 3 as a base blend. 2. You’ve not used this soil before and have been fertilizing it according to schedule. Solution: Add more soil and compost to alleviate potential nutrient lockout, google nutrient lockout to get very easy ways to test for which nute is too high and amend. 3. Soil composition is off a lil bit, too much compaction of the dirt can also lead down this road. Solution: add drainage and aeration media, Perlite, Peat Moss, etc. One final piece of advice that was gold for me from an old grower. Fertilize tomatoes only until flowering, than at flower fertilize once with completely burnt wood ash, and a light calcium fertilizer. (Made with vinegar and eggshells for calcium) and than leave ehm! No more nutes, great flavors and production. At the end of the year amend dirt from tomato plants with same mix at flower to prep soil for next years use. Phew! 😮‍💨 That was a long one ☝️ Happy Planting! 😄
