# New puzzle 🧩 this is my golden pothos/epiprimnum that I chopped and…

New puzzle 🧩 this is my golden pothos/epiprimnum that I chopped and extended 40 days ago and then 6 days later I watered with Schultz 10-15-10 seven drops for 1 quart water
Then 13 days go by before I got a reminder to water and noticed the bottom two leaves were wilted and looking a little yellow and so I watered the pole with clean water but then I watered it five days later, just water but then 13 days after that 🤪 This is my first time using a sphagnum moss pole so I’m just getting used to knowing when to water it.
I did think it was the Schultz because it was getting crusty around the lid and threw it out. So I would love to know what everyone else uses for fertilizer before I buy something else lol
Do I need to do a root check or chop it again? I’m loosing a leaf every few days now as it rises through the vine 😭

I use this. It’s spend but diluted at about 4 ml (about a capful) per gallon - use at every watering then I don’t have to keep track. There are other dilution rates if your fertilizing every other, once a month, etc.

I’d say the yellow leaf is either shock or overwatering. When I separated my monstera andansonii and put them on spaghum moss poles, I mostly just watered when the pole got dry. My intention is to have the roots growing into the pole MORE than the soil and up size the leaf size hopefully. That has mostly worked so far

Thank you 😊

A) water the pole when it gets dry to the touch in the area where the plant is. Just stick your finger into one of those holes to feel. You can also use the “crunch test” as a shorthand, where you water when the moss makes a crunching noise when pressed.

B) I’ve recently switched to leafy luster by pretty in green, and I like it now than superthrive foliage pro, which I was using before that. It has instructions for moss on the bottle, ships quickly, and if you have issues you can usually get a response from the product’s creator within a couple days.

C) what was it on before the moss? If you look at the back of the pole is it rooted in well?

It was already on a moss pole before I chopped it and was doing really well. I could have just extended it but I didn’t want to keep the first few leaves that were small from when I started growing it.
The moss has felt crunchy initially before I watered it but now I’m second guessing myself. I did make a note about it being too dry when I watered after the time I fertilized.
I was losing leaves off two other pothos plants at the same time, and I had fertilized them with the same stuff.
I might try looking at the roots tomorrow and see if they have any rotting going on. It’s hard to know for sure what caused it but I hope it stops spreading.
Thanks for your help 🙏 I’m going to check out Leafy Luster, I was looking at SuperThrive too.

\*\*leafy lux, not luster. Not sure what my head was doing.

If this happened to other plants with the same exposure then it sounds likely that the fertilizer was the culprit.

If this was the first chop/extend, how were you fertilizing before? Have you always fertilized the pole? What about the potting mix in the pot?

I wouldn’t worry about roots in the pot if you just chopped; the important roots should be predominantly in the pole, so you can look from the back/sides to see them. If the pole roots weren’t used to being fertilized they may have been extra vulnerable to burn. I also don’t think you have to worry too much about over-watering the pole, so long as there’s good drainage and your moss isn’t packed over-densely. One nice thing about sphagnum is that it allows for a good amount of oxygen, which prevents the anaerobic organisms that drive wet rot from taking hold. Overwatering a pole might lead to slower growth but I have yet to kill a plant that way.

I was using Osmocote slow release by sticking them in the moss pole before chopping and the pot had sphagnum moss and orchid bark and chunky perlite. This last time I used a chunky orchid mix and some leca, so it’s more airy now.
I found Leafy Lux and it should be delivered today.
I have been using extra water to try flushing the moss out and I have thought about replacing the moss but it might really be more damaging than leaving it alone.

Yeah, definitely don’t try to mess with the moss. Sounds like a root trauma trapped in a nightmare.

I think if you’ve run a decent amount of water through you should be fine. How long has the osmocote been in?

#### DanishGramma ha risposto il 2024-08-20

It’s been months since I last used the Osmocote

#### K ha risposto il 2024-08-20

I think you’re probably fine then

I’ll also second @Amie206: if you’re not already fertilizing the poles with every watering then I’d probably start there. Obviously a pole isn’t semi-hydro because sphagnum is an organic medium, but it’s similar because the moss itself isn’t providing nutrients. I tend to approach poles kind of like I do semi-hydro, in that I include nutrients every time unless I’m flushing. When I started with poles I alternated on a schedule, but this seems both simpler and more effective so far.

I’m going to start doing that too. Hopefully I’ll have better results 😊 Thanks so much for your help!

I’m still confused about how to water it because I thought I had to keep the pole damp at all times or not let it dry completely but now I’m supposed to wait until it’s crunchy?

#### K ha risposto il 2024-08-20

Slight crunch, which generally means the outside is drying but the inside is still a little damp

I just got some pictures of the roots and they are kind of scary 😱

#### K ha risposto il 2024-08-20

Scary good or bad?

#### DanishGramma ha risposto il 2024-08-20

Big and thick

Monstera have the most satisfying roots of any genus. One of my favorite things about them

#### DanishGramma ha risposto il 2024-08-22

I wish I had the space for one of those 😁

#### K ha risposto il 2024-08-22

Pothos aren’t as chunky but the visible roots are one of my favorite things about my pothos poles.

Obviously not for everyone, but have you considered a smaller monstera species?
