Hi plant friends! I’m looking for some advice on this bad boy. I feel like she’s supposed to be a little fuller and a lot less leggy? These are clippings that were planted about 3 weeks ago. Thanks in advance!

It’ll produce more shoots eventually or you can chop and prop again. Honestly they grow better in water and cutting them back again will help with new growth.

Usually leggy = not enough light.

Few things:

1\) as MattL noted, looks like it could use more light.
2\) eventually all tradescantia look leggy because of how they age. Cut back to the first leaf, take the cuttings, and stick them back in the pot. For an even fuller look just cut out the longer areas of bare stem before you do so.
3\) regardless of prop method, they really seem to hate having multiple nodes under the soil or water. It’s the only thing that’s ever caused those props to fail for me.

I know cutting it way back might seem very aggressive or like it’ll take forever to get back to the same length, but these guys thrive off of it. You’ll have more tradescantia than you can handle before you know it.

Propagate to get a full lush pot. Get a slightly bigger pot (5” or 6”) with well draining soil.
Cut the vines in half as shown.
Poke holes in the soil with a pencil or chopstick deep enough to plant the cuttings (1 - 2 nodes in the soil).
Remove all leaves that are under the soil when planted to prevent rot.
Dip cuttings in root stimulator powder (optional).
Thoroughly water. Loose soil will fill in the holes.
Roots form within 2 weeks. Fertilize monthly as usual in warm months.

Place in at least 6 hours of bright indirect sunlight or 12 hours under a grow light. The light will darken the colors. The leaf nodes will be closer together when it has enough light.
