# Ok, so we’re doing a series on some of the most popular plant myths…

_Gepostet von Planta am 2025-04-24_

Ok, so we’re doing a series on some of the most popular plant myths floating around right now. First up:

🌱 "Adding sugar to your plant’s soil will boost its growth.”

At first glance, this sounds logical—plants need sugar for energy, right? So why not help them out with a little sweet sprinkle?

Well… not so fast.

🧪 The Science Behind It:

Plants do rely on sugar (specifically glucose) for energy—but they don’t get it from the soil. They produce it themselves through photosynthesis, a process where they turn sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into food. Basically, they’re self-sufficient chefs.

So when you add sugar to the soil, you’re not feeding your plant—you’re feeding the wrong crowd.

🦠 What Actually Happens:
\* Sugar might encourage fungal and bacterial overgrowth.
\* This can lead to mold, smelly soil, and root suffocation.
\* It might also disrupt the healthy soil microbiome, which plants rely on for nutrient uptake.

💚 What actually helps plants grow well is optimal growing conditions. Different plants are adapted to different environments, so instead make sure it receives optimal conditions in terms of:

\* Light
\* Watering
\* Nutrient availability
\* Soil type

And put the sugar in your coffee / tea instead ☕️

also if we're getting biological...
sucrose(cane sugar)
is a disaccharide composed of glucose AND fructose
unlike glucose which is a monosaccharide and is composed of a 6 carbon ring(C6H12O6)
while sucrose has both a 6 and 5 carbon ring
glucose is directly used in metabolism rather than having to be broken down like sucrose is.
plants do use sucrose but high amounts can cause osmotic pressure...😅😅😅i like bio lowk mb

Haha yesss love the bio deep dive! 🤓 You’re totally right - plants do produce and use sucrose naturally, but when we add it externally (especially in high amounts), it can throw off the osmotic balance and lead to more harm than good. And the bio class energy is always welcome! 🤓🪴 /Ida

im a bio nerd and i love plants if any of my babies die bc someone wants to help out....
never giving them to my friend again....my poor pink princess lost 5 leaves that summer...

Another myth that I like to tell people about is the one that says putting rocks at the bottom of a pot will give your plant good drainage. It does not. With or without drain holes in the pot, rocks actually inhibit water drainage.

Totally agree and it’s coming up! 😁🥳

Looking forward to the rest of the series! This is the kind of content I want to see from Planta 👍🏻👍🏻
