Honestly I’m pretty sure if you just take one of those leaves and stick it in soil it will root. Gorgeous color!

I've heard you have to dig it up to plant it... but I'm really not 100% sure

Well, if you just take a trowel and thoroughly loosen the soil around the pup, you should be able to find one root where it’s connected to the main plant. Sever that root cleanly (I’d just position a spade and step on it to cut it cleanly) and pull the pup out gently.

Blue Agave is really beautiful. I had one planted in my front yard when I lived in Florida (Or as I call it, Plant Paradise).

To help your friend successfully dig up a pup (offset) from a blue agave plant, here are some steps to follow:

Tools Needed:

• Garden gloves (agave can be sharp)
• A small spade or garden trowel
• Pruners (if needed to cut roots)
• A container or pot with well-draining soil (if not planting directly into the ground)

Steps to Dig Up the Pup:

1\. Locate the Pup: Identify a pup that has a clear separation from the main plant. The goal is to find one with its own root system.
2\. Loosen the Soil: Using the spade or trowel, gently loosen the soil around the pup. Start a few inches away from the base to avoid damaging the roots.
3\. Expose the Roots: Once the soil is loose, carefully dig deeper to expose the roots connecting the pup to the main plant. Agave roots tend to be shallow but can spread widely.
4\. Separate the Pup: Once you find the connecting root, use the pruners to carefully cut it. Make sure you have enough roots attached to the pup for successful transplanting.
5\. Lift the Pup Gently: Lift the pup out of the ground gently, keeping as many roots intact as possible.
6\. Transplant the Pup: If planting immediately in the ground, dig a hole similar in size to the root ball of the pup, and plant it at the same depth as it was growing. If using a container, make sure the soil is well-draining, as agaves are susceptible to rot if left in waterlogged soil.

Aftercare:

• Water Sparingly: Water the pup lightly after transplanting. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, as agaves are drought-tolerant and do not like overly wet conditions.
• Sunlight: Make sure the plant gets adequate sunlight—agaves thrive in full sun to partial shade.

By following these steps, your friend should be able to successfully transplant a blue agave pup!
