# My Calathea Orbifola has gotten yellow at the edges with spots in…

_Posted by Sparky🤍plants on 2024-02-14_

My Calathea Orbifola has gotten yellow at the edges with spots in between. It was very close to a grow light and I decided to move it a little further away so it didn’t get burnt. The plant came with the spot towards the tip of the leaf and that part has not changed. Grown in water which is switched once a month. Never used fertilizer. The plant is putting on a new leaf but it hasn’t fully grown.
Any tips/help?

Day I got it (I made a post asking what type of plant it was but I can’t remember the exact date)

What are all the white speckles all over the plant? Dust? Or pests?

I don’t have experience with water prop, sorry!

I’m not sure what the specks are, they don’t seem to be from the plant though

I definitely think you made the right choice in moving it further away from the grow light. Calatheas generally, handle medium indirect, so give it some light and some shade. But im not too experienced in propagating so take my advice with a grain of salt. I think you could try using distilled or rainwater for your cutting and see if that’ll do anything different. I know calatheas are very sensitive to minerals in tap water, so they prefer filtered water. But make sure it’s room temperature water and not cold water.

Thank you, I do water with filtered water but this time of year it is pretty cold. I’ll try letting the water sit for a bit before putting it in the glass

Those white specks are very concerning. They might be spider mites. Have you checked underneath the leaves and around the plant and seen any webbing?? The yellowing could be damage from them.
