# What should I do with my silver sword to make it happier and mature…

_Posted by MorningJorie on 2026-07-29_

What should I do with my silver sword to make it happier and mature to split leaves?
The first foot of stem is completely bare, which does not look pretty or too supportive!
Thanks!

looks like a chop is in order!!!!! the plant isn't maturing because it's not growing along the pole anymore, it's splayed out to the side.

Thanks! Thats what I was thinking. It worries me because the original stalk doesn’t look very healthy. But I would hope that would improve with cutting it back and encouraging growth. And hopefully the top of the cutting takes to soil!

i think it's just corking, getting woody because it's tall. a lot of plants do it, not really indicative of a problem. if you scrape a little bit it should be green or white under

Great observations. Thanks so much for the advice!

I may be wrong but Silver Swords don’t have fenestrations when mature.

You’re right! I really meant the full expression of the leaf shape, which is more tri-lobed / more of the sword shape!
