# I’ve noticed recently that a lot of people are posting about…

I’ve noticed recently that a lot of people are posting about overwatered plants. Something that I’ve learned from my thorough research and experience is that most plants prefer to dry out between waterings. A great way to check if a plant needs to be watered is to insert a wooden skewer or chopstick, leave it in for a minute, and if it comes out dry with no dirt on it, it’s time to water. And remember that Planta’s schedule is never completely accurate! ALWAYS check your plant before watering!

Here is a list of plants that like to dry out between waterings: Succulents, cacti, moth orchids, peperomia, tradescantia, monsteras, pothos, philodendrons, spider plants, syngoniums, dracaena, corn plants, money tree, ZZ plants, aglaonema (Chinese evergreen), cast iron plant, Chinese money plant, umbrella plant, bromeliads, hoya.

Plants that don’t like to dry out between waterings: nerve plants, begonias, polka dot plants, ferns, prayer plants, rubber plants, birds of paradise, carnivorous plants (which require a whole different care system than most plants), alocasias, peace lilies, dieffenbachia.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Would you say string of pearls and string of bananas like to dry out or don’t like to dry out? My string of pearls is blooming and I haven’t had it very long so I’m still trying to figure out a water routine. I’ve been trying to keep it moist by misting every couple of days.

Yes, since strings of things are succulents, they need to dry out. Misting is also not good for plants, for a variety of reasons, which I will be doing a post about tomorrow. When you water your succulents, water until you see it coming out of the drainage holes, and don’t water again until the soil is completely dry. Your succulents will also become slightly squishier when they need water, so that’s an easy way to tell if they need water soon.
