\*\*don’t use tap water\*\*

The damage on this leaf appears to be a leaf burn or rot, which could be due to overwatering, inconsistent watering, or exposure to direct sunlight, especially if the plant is a Calathea or similar. Here’s how to address the issue:

1\. Prune the Damaged Area

• Use sterile scissors or pruning shears to remove the affected part of the leaf. Cut into healthy tissue to prevent the spread of damage. Make a clean cut, leaving no jagged edges, as this helps the plant heal.

2\. Adjust Watering

• Ensure that you are watering consistently. Calatheas and similar plants prefer their soil to stay slightly moist but never soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again.
• Use room-temperature, distilled water or rainwater to avoid leaf damage from salts or minerals found in tap water.

3\. Increase Humidity

• These plants love high humidity. Increase humidity around the plant by misting it, placing a humidifier nearby, or using a humidity tray (a shallow tray with pebbles and water).

4\. Proper Light Conditions

• Make sure the plant is receiving bright, indirect light. If the plant is getting direct sunlight, move it to a spot with filtered light or provide shade, as direct sun can cause leaf burn.

5\. Check for Pests

• Inspect the plant closely for any signs of pests (like spider mites, which can damage leaves). If found, use neem oil or an insecticidal soap to treat them.

6\. Assess Soil \& Drainage

• If overwatering is a problem, consider repotting the plant with well-draining soil and ensuring that the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom.

Following these steps should help the plant recover and prevent further damage. Monitor the plant closely over the next few weeks to see improvements in its health and leaf condition.

Remove the affected leaves then an Anti fungal treatment is gonna be necessary. “Empress” is good! I’d quarantine it too. Make sure to water only when completely necessary.

I find them pretty easy to overwater, I check to see if it’s at an inch of dryness then I give it a few more days… just personal preference though. If you need to up the humidity, humidifier is preferable over misting the leaves.

Definitely agree both on misting (just don’t do it) and overwatering. I once had one of these that went almost nine months without water and was fine afterward. I don’t recommend doing that, but the overall point is that overwatering is going to lead to problems much faster than underwatering for these guys.

I wouldn’t recommend trimming the leaves as you may release more spores into the space. Cut as close to the stem as possible, not near the affected area
