hi everyone, I needed a little help with my plant right here. It’s a peacock plant. I recently got it and I got some advice to put it over pebbles with water to help with humidity. I also got advice to use filtered water rather than tapwater so I’ve also been watering it with filtered water. However, I do notice that there are a good amount of leaves dried up towards the bottom of the plant. I wanted advice on how to fix this issue so my plan could be healthy. At the same time I’ve also noticed new leaves that have Came out of the plant. For more context to I also live in Southern California. It is currently between 80°F-90°F in the day time. I do have a window AC that i run during the day to keep my room cool. The plant is no in the direct path of the air, it’s about 4feet away near a corner. If anymore context is needed I would greatly answer it, and take any recommendations for how to care better for this plant.

As you can see, I have some dried leaves too. Calathea Makoyana will dry up its old leaves as it matures and grows. As long as it’s just the old leaves drying you should be ok.

I just grab them by the base and yank them out (you may need to support the nearby healthy stems when you pull)

I’ve seen some that were like 3ft tall at Lowe’s and they don’t have any of the small leaves left, just long stems with nothing under the huge leaves. So I just don’t believe its leaves are meant to be permanent.

Rocks don’t work for humidity, you need a humidifier otherwise it’s not going to help.

Finally, I was still getting browning edges with filtered water, I had to switch to distilled water to fully fix the brown edges.

Good luck!

As the water evaporates, it may help with humidity. However, like Evil Plant Dad said, humidifiers work better and look better. also, why is the plant in the water? If it’s in the water, it is most likely being overwatered, which’s could mean root rot. Typically you elevate the plant above the water level or put the plant to the side of the water pot. Never in unless you plan on watering the plant. I’d check for root rot and get yourself a humidifier or diffuser. If you use essential oils in a diffuser, check to see the oil is planter friendly when diffused into the air. Hope this helps!
