# Hello everyone ! Question???? Do you all put Neem oil in the water…

Hello everyone !  
Question????  
Do you all put Neem oil in the water used to water your plants????? And if so how effective is it????? And if you don’t what do you use for Gnats???

To deter fungus gnats is a multi step process

1.) good quality soil without peat moss or at least very little  
2.) soil amendments to aid in aeration and leaving more surface area for water to dry out faster around the roots to avoid root rot, which attracts fungus gnats  
3.) Terracotta pots are my secret weapon or plastic nursery pots that have more than one drainage hole  
4.) Making sure the soil line in the pots is pretty much at the top or just a 1/4 inch or so from the top  
5.) Well ventilated room, leaving a ceiling fan or a clip on oscillating fan on to improve airflow  
6.) not overwatering  
If you already have the fungus gnat problem

1.) mosquito bits are good to water in  
2.) use beneficial nematodes to water in and kill the eggs  
3.) For the adults flying around, plug in bug zappers are a must, around your plants and also in your kitchen and bathrooms where they tend to hang out.

I didn't find the watering with Neem helped for me, i was doing neem as well as misquito bit water. The neem was not good for some of my sensitive plants. I switched to using Bonide systemic granules on the soil. HUGE drop in fungus gnats. I just switched to Sierra Natural science 209, still very happy.

Forgive me! Bonide systemic and Sierra natural are two different products right???? And you’re saying you’ve tried both and they work for you?!?!?

Yes, two different products. The Bonide, you sprinkle the granules on the top of the soil (you can mix them in too) and then water as normal, and this kills larva or bugs in the soil. The 209 is a liquid you can spray on or water with depending on what you need. It will actually soak in, and deter pests eating your plants, as well as kill larva in the soil

I should clarify that further and say you only need one or the other. I changed from the Bonifide to 209 because it's supposed to be even gentler on the plants.

usually the problem is soil content. i’ve eliminated fungus gnats by using a very coarse aerated soil for basically all of my plants. those that need more moisture have coconut coir mixed in instead of peat moss, which tends to grow mold and fungi that the fungus gnats will feed on. most commercial potting soils are too dense and heavy for indoor growing.  
airflow and allowing the soil to dry out as much as the plant can tolerate between waterings will help if you choose not to repot.  
i would recommend staying away from pesticides like neem oil, which is largely ineffective, or bonide systemic granules, which are toxic and will only mask the problem (soggy soil) by killing off the gnats. the granules will also make your plants and their soil toxic, so definitely better to avoid them if you have pets or small children. please read the safety data sheets if you’re considering purchasing them.
