# I’ve been holding off on repotting my Fernwood/Mikado snake plant…

I’ve been holding off on repotting my Fernwood/Mikado snake plant (trying to wait for Spring) but I promised my godson a few of the pups and he’s been asking me nonstop. There’s only so much patience you can expect a six year old to have. 😂 I hadn’t planned to repot, I was just going to wriggle out a few pups to make him a new plant. But then I saw this foam wrapped all around the base of my plant! Imagine my shock. It was so hard to remove - intertwined between every little shoot and so many pups had grown right up into and through it!

I’m not mad because this one was from my very favorite and reputable garden and I can see why they did it. The “plant” I purchased was actually multiple plants potted together and the foam helped them grow together in a straight, close grouping. It was a good look. Hopefully, it still grows nicely without the support. In the end, I have a new plant for my godson, my original gal “Franny” and a third Fernwood for a friend. Can’t recommend this plant enough - it wasn’t expensive, pups came out all through winter and it grew quickly. None of my other snake plants grow this quickly. 💚

Unfortunately, lots of nurseries do this. They are called death plugs. They stunt growth and eventually kill off the entire plant. I do not purchase plants that have them because of this and do not return to stores that do use them. It’s a cheap way to make plants and makes you wonder what else they are cutting corners on

Valid point. I have purchased from this garden many times and never had this issue. I’ll be mindful of it though!

It doesn’t look like a mesh or cave of death type fixture. Those are cheap starter bags/baskets they never remove. This device is not constricting the roots. Looks like it can come off with cutting roots.
I would agree it kept the young plants upright.

This isn’t a “death plug”. I’ve only seen this done on this particular plant. It’s because they are just cuttings and the grower wraps foam around them to hold together till they root. I had one that had layers of stems wrapped with the foam. I removed as much as possible.
