# Got an Orchid a week ago. Any maintenance tip? Do I need to repot?…

_Publié par Abbygail le 2025-05-30_

Got an Orchid a week ago. Any maintenance tip? Do I need to repot? Also on the instructions it says to water every 14 days but on the app says every 7 days. What would you recommend? Secondly how do I water it in the pot if it’s not draining? Thanks in advance.

The only time I was able to keep orchids alive is when I just put them in water

You’ll need a pot with drainage or the roots will rot, also the roots will tell you when it’s time to water. Best practice is to pot an orchid in a clear pot so you can see the roots. When dry the roots are a silvery color, and when wet the roots turn bright green. You’ll only want to water when they’re all silver again. It looks like they’re in moss right now which is very moisture retaining, they will likely take longer to dry out if you keep it in moss. Keep in mind the orchid roots love airflow so if the substrate is too tight it might choke the roots causing rot. I bought one that was in soil in the store and it very quickly has been rotting all the roots since it retains moisture for too long and doesn’t provide any airflow for the roots. I’m waiting for the blooms to drop so I can repot with orchid bark instead. Orchids grow on the sides of trees in nature, so that’s why they don’t like soil. Fun fact, orchids are one of few (if not the only) plants that have roots that photosynthesize, that’s why they’re so filled with green chlorophyll and they like to be exposed to the sun sometimes. Hope this is helpful information :)

This was super helpful thank you so much! I was thinking the pot they put it in might not be a good for drainage. I’ve been losing petals as we speak. Also is the white hay looking thing the moss?
