# Hi! I bought some coco coir on Amazon because I want to try to make…

Hi! I bought some coco coir on Amazon because I want to try to make my own Aroid soil mix. However, it came in an extremely firmly packed brick with instructions to:
\- Add water gradually and slowly on top of the brick, letting the brick absorb the water.
\- Continue this process of adding water as long as the brick continues to absorb the water.
\- Each brick with absorb approximately 14-16 cups of water.
\- Stop adding water when the brick absorbs the water.
\- The coco coir is now ready for planting. Add fertilizer for the plant.

So, my plan WAS to whip up soil whenever I needed it by grabbing all of my ingredients and mixing. If I follow the above instructions, can I then store this moist/wet coco coir in a plastic container/bag? Or can this only be done the day of and maybe I should try to use a sharp knife and cut a piece off the end then use the instructions above accordingly. Any help appreciated!

Just break pieces off as you need it. Store it dry.

If you choose to break off a piece, it can be quite tricky - I use a screwdriver and hammer combo to chisel off a chunk. Alternatively, I hydrate the whole brick and set it aside to openly dry out. It doesn’t really attract fungus gnats or mold that I’ve noticed, I believe coir is supposed to be pretty fungal resistant. I’ve heard of people storing theirs damp in a Tupperware or lidded bucket, but I personally avoid sealing damp material as a general rule, no matter how resistant to mold it may be. Anyway, that’s my two cents! It’s a pretty low-maintenance medium, so fortunately you don’t have to overthink it too much :) and it’s very fun to watch it fluff up!

Thank you so much! Do you know how “big” one brick would make once it’s watered? I don’t want to get myself into something I don’t have room to store, however I would like to follow the instructions and just water the whole brick, break it up, dry it then pluck from it when necessary. I could put it in a garbage bag and leave in my patio and it would dry quickly as I’m in Phoenix. So how much do you think it will expand?

Assuming you got a normal size brick and not a jumbo or anything, it’ll make one large mixing bowl full to the absolute brim (speaking from experience lol). I used my biggest bowl and it was slightly overflowing, so i think a 2gallon bucket would be perfect if you have one.

Oh okay great! I just saved a big container that could serve just the purpose. Thanks so much for your responses!

Perfect :) no problem at all!

Cutting off sections was the hardest part. I used a hand saw. I have to try the hammer and chisel method. I put it on the lawn to cut it. The sawdust gets everywhere.

Thank you for that important info
