# One of my very large hanging pothos n’joy’s stems was looking a…

_Lagt ut av Melody den 2025-10-11_

One of my very large hanging pothos n’joy’s stems was looking a little sad. I shopped off the stem and kept the good parts. Each stem has 2-4 nodes on it and some have a few leaves.

I I’m planning on waiting a day or two for the wound to heal them propagating them. Anyone have more luck with soil or water? And if I do soil how deep shoudl I plant the stem and shoudl it be under the soil? And for water should I add leca? Also if anyone has any general pothos propagation tips please share.

Thank you in advance!!!

Hi there, I’ve propagated so many of these in just water. Key is to change the water weekly to replenish the oxygen for the cuttings. When roots form and grow to be about 5-6cm or 2 inches or they have secondary roots, I plant out. I have all mine potted up in semi hydro (either LECA or pumice) and they grow happily in that substrate

Pothos propagate well in water or soil. Water makes it easier to see the roots grow. Cuttings propagated in soil develop stronger roots and no transfer shock. Pothos are resilient. Water propagation is fine even if the cuttings initially grow slower than props on soil. You can experiment with water, Leca, soil, perlite, fuval and other potting/propagation material since you have several cuttings.

No need to dry out new cuttings like cactus/succulents.

Remove all leaves under water to prevent rot. Change the water when it’s cloudy. Pothos produce their own rooting hormone that encourages root growth. Some people only empty out one half of the water to preserve the hormones during water changes. A full or partial water change both work.

Fertilize with diluted fertilizer when roots appear. I add SuperThrive Plant Vitamins with the fertilizer.

Transfer to soil or other medium when roots are at least 2 inches long. 🪴🍀

That’s great information! Thank you!

Ok thank you so mush for the help. Based on any personal experience you have, would you recommend soil or water?

I would recommend both. Water makes it easier to see the roots grow and causes less stress initially before transplanting. Starting in soil means not transplanting later. But, newbies tend to overwater unrooted cuttings in soil which can lead to rot. It’s your preference which method you use. You may have to try it to better understand it.

Why did my brain think that these were hanging vertically on a wall like a decoration? 😆😆😆

I was like I don’t think they’re gonna grow roots that way ……. 🤦🏻‍♀️

For me I propagate Pothos in soil. It takes FOREVER but they seem to grow faster and stronger this way rather than water props.

Ok thank you I planted them in soil under a grow light and them seem to be doing good
