Hey! So that white, fuzzy stuff on your soil is most likely a harmless type of fungus or mold that’s pretty common in houseplants. It usually thrives when the soil is consistently moist, there isn’t enough airflow, or there’s high humidity. Here’s what you can do to tackle it:
1\. Remove the top layer of moldy soil. Gently scoop out the top inch or so of soil and replace it with fresh, dry potting soil.
2\. Improve air circulation. Make sure the plant is in a spot where air can flow around it more freely.
3\. Adjust your watering. Let the top layer of the soil dry out a bit between waterings. Most houseplants prefer to have the soil dry out at least partially.
4\. Consider a natural antifungal. Sprinkling a light layer of cinnamon on the soil surface can act as a natural antifungal agent.
5\. Check drainage. Ensure that your pot has good drainage holes, and if needed, repot the plant in well-draining soil.

No need to stress; you’ve got this! It’s just the plant world’s way of keeping things interesting.

Ahh thank you! I’m just glad it’s harmless tbh! I think it’s that now winter is here the humidity in my flat has skyrocketed. I had to fork out £250 on a fancy dehumidifier to avoid mould issues and it reads that often times the humidity in my flat is 90% 💀. I’ll try scoop it out and refrain from watering for a while and see how that goes!

Is this a Janet Craig plant? Be sure you are only using distilled or rain water for her.

It is! Yeah I’m actually a bit of an idiot and I didn’t realise that bottled water isn’t the same as distilled water 💀. So yeah I need to figure that out 😂 we haven’t had a lot of rain here and I live in a flat with no balcony or any way to catch rain water. I live in a bit of a rough area too so I can guarantee anything I leave out to catch rain water will either be kicked over or stolen

Well, there's another option that may help.

Tap water can sometimes contain high levels of fluoride, chlorine, or other minerals that can cause browning leaf tips and damage to the plant over time. If you use tap water, allow it to sit out overnight to let some of the chemicals evaporate before watering. This plant likes its soil to dry out slightly between waterings, so ensure you’re not overwatering.

If you’re using bottled water, it’s generally okay as long as it’s not mineral water or water with added minerals or electrolytes, as these can lead to salt buildup in the soil. Spring water and distilled water are better options compared to mineral or purified water with additives. Always check the label to ensure there’s nothing extra added that might harm the plant over time.
