# So I have an assortment of plants on my front porch, and they are…

So I have an assortment of plants on my front porch, and they are already taking a hit from the cold weather. I wanted to know since it’s starting get in the 60s-upper 50s, if any of these plants can be front inside for the season, and if not how can I cut them down so they will come back again in the spring. I live in the Midwest so we get freezes and show around January. I spent a good amount of money on these and I’d hate to lose them all. Thanks for the help!

Perennials that are cold hardy can survive winter and return in spring. Annuals die at the end of season or after producing seeds. Check online for data on each plant to see if they are annuals or perennials and which ones can take cold weather. You can add at least 6 inches of mulch around the roots of the perennials to help protect the roots in the winter months. 🪴🍀

I see at least one that won’t survive winter-the purple shield.

From left to right :

Dill - cold hardy herb. Can go down to 20s.
Sweet potato vine (ipomea batatas) can go down to around 40s but I’ve seen them handle colder. Root cuttings in water.
Dusty miller - can tolerate short periods of 15f with proper mulching and make sure it stays watered
Strawberry - usually dies back but resprout next year. You can cut back any offshoots on a long stem to try to root.
Persian shield - generally used in fall decor but can’t handle cold. Props in water but I would just dig it up and bring inside. It needs a lot of light tho to maintain the purple.
Lavender? Usually cold hardy. I think you have two varieties?

Hope this helps. :)
