# Hello again! I’m relatively new to plant care, so I just need some…

Hello again! I’m relatively new to plant care, so I just need some help. This time I just have a small question: How often should you water a calathea? I forget to water my plants sometimes and my calathea has almost died multiple times, and is very witty and dry. Any tips would be appreciated!

For almost all plants my general rule is to only water if the top inch is dry. Invest in a raw bamboo stick/skewer to stick and mark an inch on it and use it for your Calathea. If you pull it out and it’s mostly clean and dry to the touch that’s when you water.

I bottom water my Calathea ( gnat prevention). The top is always nearly dry. Would your watering tip still apply!

Hmmm…the tip probably wouldn’t apply but if you have a watering schedule on Plants you know is accurate/are able to tell by the weight of the pot if it needs water then you can do those. If you need to use the watering tip water with 1:3 parts water and hydrogen peroxide on top so it prevents fungus gnats and you can get an accurate reading on its thirst

I let my Calatheas dry about halfway down before watering them

misting tends to be a bit of a controversial topic in the plant community, as it doesnt always help.  
most of the time, it only raises the humidity levels for a little while, while a humidifier can maintain the levels in a more consistant way.

but do whatever works for you, every environment and set up is different 🌱
