# Hey all, I’m a new \[indoor\] plant mum! I’ve been growing for some…

Hey all, I’m a new \[indoor\] plant mum! I’ve been growing for some time in my garden/greenhouse, in the past I’ve failed at indoor plants terribly but thought I’d give it a shot again.

I recently bought; Aluminium Plant, polka dot plant, nerve plant \& a Purple Velvet Plant - I went for the nontoxic plants as I do have a fair amount of pets, although they are out of reach.

I’d really appreciate any advice, recommendations anyone could offer 🙂🫶🏼 TIA!

Can you attach pictures for us to help you?

You picked some difficult plants with specific needs. Philodendrons, monsteras, sansevieria would be much easier to start. Research your new plants on the internet to find what they will need.

I believe African violets are non toxic. I heard they can be a little finicky but once you get used to the care routine they’re easy to handle.

Don’t water as often as the planta app tells you to. I’ve overwatered quite a few plants by going by the Planta schedule. If anything, when it tells you to water your plant, just check it and if the soil is still dry 1-2 inches deep, then go ahead and water it

Fittonia/nerve plant doesn't like to dry all the way out. It will wilt dramatically if it's too thirsty (which is interesting to see once, but you shouldn't let it do that if you can avoid it) and can recover just as quickly. It's normal for them to have a papery leaf texture. Pilea/aluminum plant is pretty straightforward and average on needs. It wants good drainage. Polka dot plant likes dryer conditions than the other two, so let it go longer between waterings. Purple velvet plant will also want the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Make sure none of the bottom roots of any of them sit in water; failure to drain is the main cause of root rot

I’m trying again myself after killing mini indoor plans either from overwatering or underwater in Usual. I have cheap sun lamps from Amazon which you can set on a timer so they get good light and I also bought water indicators which I can look at and it easily tells me if if it’s too dry dry or not.

My mother had the most beautiful plants I’ve still ever seen, and I did not inherit her gift. My mom told me “they want to fight to live”. Which was her way of saying don’t overwater them.
