# Can I pot my alocasia in straight perlite ? It is a rhizome or corm ?…

_Lagt ut av Bri den 2024-08-21_

Can I pot my alocasia in straight perlite ? It is a rhizome or corm ? Not sure exactly what you call it (Previously a bambino with leaves, the leaves fell off and are regrowing) the leaves have started to come back and have been getting big ! I did noticed small white bugs and have been spraying but it’s been a pain in my butt ! 😆 I also do have soil but not sure if it retains too much moisture for this plant. Please help ! I want to grow her back and flourish ! 😭

corms

i wouldn’t do perlite only — alocasia likes the medium to hang onto water since they don’t want to dry out. i know people have a lot of success growing them semi-hydro in leca or pon

i have mine in a 1:1 peat and perlite and feed it regularly— seems to be working!

Yeah I see a lot of leaca and pon as well I have neither on hand so lol, should I just repot it then ? The leaves seem to mush ? After a few days Idk what’s going on it’s just the stem part

ah right to address the bugs maybe a repot. hmm…weird. these leaves look nice and green, if baby. they’re turning mushy? what about the base — is that soft? everything looks pretty good in this photo

if you repot you can dig around gently for a corm — it might be small but if you have one you can try planting that for a total reset

This is what I’m dealing with ! It was getting so full and big now just about everything is dying off

Ok pulling this out of the thread because it’s annoying the expand — something the app developers can worry about 😂

I am not an alocasia expert, I have only ever had one and it’s thriving but it’s my only exp, but I think I can translate some principle stuff? i think what you knocked off were the bulbils and it’s probably not ideal that it happened but not catastrophic and like…oh well can’t undo it 😂

so this is such a weird one huh? everything looks good so i think we have to just pot her up and leave her alone. so just be suuuper delicate with the roots for the next part

a 1:1 peat and perlite with a handful of orchid bark is really working for mine; and I think even skipping the bark would be fine if you don’t have it on hand. this is going to hold onto the right amount of moisture and be gentle on the roots in transfer. keep it in the nursery pot, maybe even a slightly smalller one if you have it lying around.

these are infamously fussy right? my approach with the fussy ones is to not overcorrect. drop this somewhere bright (maybe a growlight space?) and just water and feed regularly — never letting the soil dry out \*completely\* and just wait.

i feel like it could probably do some more weird sad things but \*should\* level out with uninterrupted time 🤞

Lmao the expand is super annoying 🤣
Yessss she’s been so fussy ! Lol I didn’t realize she’d be such a pain when I brought her home 😆
She is a fussy one ! Lol I was thinking about a smaller pot as well this pit seems too deep
She’s been under a grow light almost all of her life that I’ve had her lol I feel like that’s what helped bring back her leaves a second time.
I’ll just have to pot her up throw her under the grow light and not even breathe her way 🤣😭 I’m hoping she comes back or I can figure out phone to get her to flourish !

Also do I do anything with these bulbils or are they of no use now ? Lol
