# I bought these hyacinths from Trader Joe’s last month and I don’t…

_Geplaatst door Wendyyyy op 2024-05-07_

I bought these hyacinths from Trader Joe’s last month and I don’t know what to do with them now. According the the plant doctor on the app they are dormant and I just need to leave them alone and water but I feel like there has to be something else I can do to this plant. Any thoughts?

you can probably pull off the dead flowers. definitely make sure it’s in a pot with the drainage holes because my mom got one that was in a similar situation and it got bugs :(

Thanks! It didn’t come with any drainage holes, it’s just in the box ☹️ I’ll have to repot them

I don’t have any but I thought hyacinths were early spring blooming bulbs and then they die back. If so, wouldn’t you store them dry until next spring so the bulbs don’t rot? Maybe you just water and provide light until the leaves fully die back and then just let the dirt dry out until next spring? 🤔 I wonder if people on the group about flowering plants would be able to help you more?

I planted hyacinths in my garden two years ago. I can’t speak on experience of how they are when just potted, but I don’t think you should necessarily be too concerned IF you’re going to plant them in the ground. From my experience with my planted ones, the bulbs are fairly hardy. They’ve grown back each year even if it got too sunny for one of them and that one burned to a crisp. My biggest tip with them is to water them often, and not the flowers themselves, but at the soil level, and make sure they’re not in full sun and have at least some shade. Hopefully someone here can give more specific tips if you’re planning on keeping them potted rather than planted, but I hope this helps! Best of luck! Hyacinths are one of my favorites.

I would try to check the bulbs and roots as you repot them, and make sure you use the right potting soil for it. I’ve read they can survive in properly draining pots, but not in as cold temperatures as if they’re planted. If you’re planning on planting them when the right season for it arrives and now’s just not great for where you live to plant, I suggest still potting them while you wait. Even if the flowers don’t come back, if the bulbs and roots seem healthy, they should still have a fair chance once you plant them.
