You can tell when a plant needs a larger pot in two ways: First, if you start noticing roots trying to come out of the bottom of the current pot. Second, if the water runs through when you water it because there are more roots than soil. Another indicator might be if the plant has grown substantially larger from when you got it since this often means that there are more roots, too. It’s helpful to know the care instructions for the specific plant since some like being somewhat root bound. When I transplant, I usually increase the pot size no more than a few inches and use fresh soil. However, I leave whatever soil is on the rootball to avoid damaging the roots. What type of plants do you have?

Check articles and YouTube videos on repotting. Search for videos on repotting your particular plant.

When you repot, look at the roots to see if they're healthy (the main thing to look for with indoor plants is root rot, but sometimes you'll find old dead roots the plant doesn't need anymore.) Loosen them up a bit and make sure none of the roots are girdling (wrapping around the root mass in a circle such that they strangle the plant as they grow.) Make sure new soil is an appropriate type for your plant (more drainage for succulents, sphagnum moss for things that need to stay super moist, etc)
