Hey there! I have a couple root related questions. My orchid(first picture) seems to have lots of healthy leaves (I have had her for about a year) but she hasn’t gained super stable roots into her pot, I think the pot is very deep. Every time a root comes to the surface it doesn’t look healthy either. For my snake plant I’m wondering if it’s root bound and I should repot or if he is doing fine and I don’t need go change anything. Thanks in advance!

Orchids are non soil plants- so they will often have showing roots. It does look like you have a great deal of root rot on the orchid based on the colors. I would repot the orchid with fresh bark and clean up the roots.

Snake plants LOVE to be root bound and this is on the lighter side. I would leave the snake plant alone for now.

Thanks so much! I’m gonna get to repotting the orchid now! Should I cut off any rotting roots? I don’t want to wreck things further for her. Also when adding in more bark pieces can I forage from my yard and boil them or would it be best to just buy them from the store?

I would cut off anything that is mushy or black.

As the roots re grow they should end up a silver color. Silver means it’s ready for water and green bean looking roots means it’s well hydrated- only water when you start to see the silver on the roots come back 🥰

I agree with LeAnn! Just wanted to add that the orchid pot looks like it might be a bit large (meaning the soil will stay wet for too long). I also recommend using a clear pot with slots on the sides. The pot being clear will allow you to keep an eye on the roots - only water it when the roots look silvery rather than green - and the slots down the sides allow for aeration around the root system.

Do you know where I could find clear pots? I’m thinking of stopping by dollarama sometime today but I have no idea if they have them there😅

Okay, I found one. How are the roots looking? I also mixed some of the old cork bark mix with a walnut bark mixture. Is that ok?
