# Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong with my ZZ plant? It was…

_Geplaatst door Aurora op 2025-05-07_

Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong with my ZZ plant? It was thriving when I got it, in the same soil and pot it’s in now. I kept it under a grow light, but the leaves started turning yellow, so I moved it to a shadier spot since they like low light in the wild. I let the soil dry out, only watered it once, and haven’t used any fertilizer. I’ve just been leaving it alone, but the leaves and stems are drooping and it’s still not doing well. The pot has no drainage and the soil holds water for a while, but I’ve been careful not to overwater to avoid root rot.

I would un-pot and check the roots and rhizomes, see if they're rotted or still good. If they are, I would repot to a smaller pot, just enough for them to fit in. If not? I would take a cutting and propagate. It will take months and months to see progress on Zz's but they look good as decoration, lol. Goodluck!

Okay, thank you!

Your pot is still the problem for sure. If it’s not a terracotta pot that pot is yet holding moisture…you need a better soil like a cactus soil, or all purpose soil mixed with perlite. It’s that pot killing your plant slowly

Is the Miracle-Gro cactus, palm, and citrus potting mix okay? I've heard mixed opinions. It's all I have right now, but if there's a more affordable option, I might try that.

No that’s fine I use miracle gro for every one of my plants. Just get a better pot ASAP
