# Hi all. I’m in zone 9 in coastal Alabama where we had the crazy fluke…

Hi all. I’m in zone 9 in coastal Alabama where we had the crazy fluke snow storm. My outside plants have been covered with frost cloth, painter’s canvas drop cloths or both in some cases.
I have removed the canvas covers on the ones getting sunshine now (temps are about 40oF, the others are getting light through the coverings) but I have gardenias that won’t get any sun today at all, just shade, and they are covered with frost cloth \& canvas tarp. It has stayed above freezing under there (thanks to xmas lights, too) according to my thermometer. Am I wrong to keep it covered for one more day and night? Tomorrow should see significantly warmer temps.
Also, should I take my Xanadu philodendron outside for some sunshine even though it’s too cold for them? They do not get enough light inside my house so idk the worst of the two evils.
Tia. Sorry so long.

I think they will recover from an extra day or two of low light. They will not recover from freezing temperatures so I vote for leaving them covered. Good job keeping them safe in this quirky snowstorm.

And no I would not take the philodendron outside.

Thank you for the input. I have a mini science experiment happening with the Xmas lights, tarps and cloths. I can hardly believe what my thermometer is telling me but it truly has not gone below 32o F under there despite 3 days of freezing temps.

I’m in zone 9, Texas. We had temperatures in the teens. I covered my Tradescantia Purple Heart with two wool shipping blankets plus a plastic drop cloth. I’ve kept them undercover wraps for up to a week because of cold weather in past years. They have survived including this recent storm. Only the uncovered edges were frozen. 🥶

Hey Amy, I’m in Mobile and worried about my outdoor plants as well. Trying an unexpected snowstorm for us! Stay warm
