So I have a watering question.

I use a moisture meter to gauge the soil. A lot of the watering instructions say that when the first two inches on top are dry.

So if the top is dry but the meter reads wet at the bottom of the pot is it ok to water? This won’t lead to root rot? Thanks everyone

Depends on the plant! For a succulent, you probably want to let it dry further, but for most plants that’s okay!

I would definitely push the meter down toward the bottom , and then when the bottom reaches low or close to low , bottom water it with a tray and then dump the remaining out after a few hours or a day or so passes . This usually keeps all my plants happy :) but definitely check the apps recommendations for your plants preferences , depending on the size of the plant and what type it is . Some succulents and other plants like to be dry for quite a bit . But other than that, I water majority of my plants, such as alocasia’s , monsteras, pitchers , caladiums , syngonium , and vine plants this way ! (To name a few LOL) But as for my succulents like my jade plant and elephant bush, they like to be watered every 2-3 weeks or so . I hope this helps , best of luck!!

Oh and also, my Aloe likes to be watered only once a month! So just double check whatever the app recommends for watering , they’re pretty spot on with that stuff for the most part , as long as you give it the most accurate information about the plant that you can, first :)

It all depends on what type of plants we are talking about. I let most of my plants dry out about 75%; Even my plants in Pon. I also let the reservoirs dry up about once a month if they are in a self watering planter...

So what I did when I was getting started is, put a wooden skewer into the pot all the way to the bottom, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, pull it out.

You can then measure/gauge how wet/dry the soil is, based on the wetness of the skewer.

Water meters are okay, but can’t always read accurately. This really helped me figure out when to water, now I’m really familiar with what my soil will look/feel like, and don’t need to use the skewers unless I have a plant I’m new to. Good luck! :)
