I got this tradescantia plant on Christmas from someone else as a gift! I’ve been watering it, but should I cut/ repot it? I’m not sure how to tell if I should rate it as in bad or good condition. Any help would be appreciated!!

Not familiar with this plant in particular but I’d rate it as good health! A couple dried up edges but nothing overly problematic from what I can tell, and it looks like there’s some new growth! As for cutting or repotting, this obviously depends on the plant species but I think it would be helpful to others on the forum if you posted a picture up a little closer to the soil (to see how crowded it is in the pot)? Or back up to get the whole thing in view? Just my 2¢!

Thank you!!! Maybe I will take another picture when I’m back home

It looks to be in good health. It looks like it may need a larger pot in the near future. They are pretty easy to propagate as well if you would prefer to just prune it and not repot. You could propagate and make gifts for others!

Thank you for the response!!!

I have one! It grows like a weed and is super easy to propagate. Within a week it’s growing roots! I also get the same looking leaves on mine and I just pick those ones off and it continues to produce new growth

Every time I get one of these plants they’re super rootbound, so I would probably repot into a pot that’s about 2 inches bigger

Agreed! They grow so fast, that it’s good to keep up with repotting before the root ball turns into a brick. I used to have a gorgeous one before I moved, but it got thrips and damaged during the move and didn’t make it 😢 Someday I’ll have another!

Good health for sure. The health conditions is based on if you see any signs of stress. Dying, browning, yellowing, generally not thriving and this plant is thriving. Check the roots to see if it needs a repot. I’d assume it doesn’t but if the roots are tightly wrapped around themselves and you can’t see the soil it roots bound and needs a repot. Some will tell you to wait until spring but I’m a rule breaker so as long as it’s warm inside where you have it there shouldn’t be a problem if you need to repot.
