# Some controversial plant ideas: Do snake plants prefer low/low medium…

_Posted by ABucketOfPlants on 2024-01-06_

Some controversial plant ideas:

Do snake plants prefer low/low medium light or lots of light?

Should you leave a dying leaf on the plant until it falls off so the plant can reabsorb all the energy, or should you cut it as soon as you see it?

Should you mist your plants or not?

I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on these.

I may start misting again, my plants here seem to thrive from it.

1\. Snake plants will slowly die in low light conditions. Like all plants they do MUCH better and thrive with indirect or moderate light.

2\. Always remove a dead leaf. As soon as you see it yellowing or browning or whatever. You want the plant to direct energy toward the live part of the plant

3\. I misted early on but in terms of humidity, it doesn’t really “do it”. Invest in a cool mist humidifier. GAME CHANGER

I agree with everything here

I’ve had my snake plant in various spots around my apartment, but I’ve found that it does the best around 5 feet away from my east facing window. I think having it in a low-light area would be okay if you moved it every once in a while to a spot where it could get some light.

In terms of misting, I’m still unsure of it myself. I think it depends on the overall temperature of your place - plants that need high humidity also need warmer temperatures to begin with. I tend to think that a humidifier would probably be better for those types of plants instead of constantly misting.

I always remove yellowing or dead leaves. I think the plant should focus on the healthier leaves instead of the dying ones

These are great questions. True conundrums.

1\. I think it depends on their stage of life. I work in a hospital where there are huge snake plants— thriving and in low light. But they are full grown and… well,.. huge.

I think if you’re trying to propagate or grow one to size, it eould meed more light.

2\. Also, I think it depends on what’s going on. If the leaf is diseased in any way, remove it.
If it’s just an old leaf let it get crispy.
Alocasia? Ditch the leaf to the base.

3\. It became too much work. I have a cabinet greenhouse with a humidifier for my plants that need misting. Everyone outside the cabinet skips the mist. Everyone inside— gets more than a misting.
