# Hello! Does anyone have a tips or tricks for money trees? We’ve had…

_Posted by Moriah on 2024-01-05_

Hello! Does anyone have a tips or tricks for money trees? We’ve had this for a couple years. It is in a self watering pot that I think my boyfriend fills once a month. It is kept in a part shade, part sun (so I think) but it’s SUPER light leaves. Some are full yellow! And anytime I Google it, it legit says “could be over watered, could be under watered, could be too much sun, could need more sun.” 😑😑 so any advice is appreciated!

Money trees love moist soil but should not be in a self-watering pot. It should be watered from the top and the pot needs excellent drainage. Water when the top inch of soil is dry.

You’ve had it a couple years - have you ever replaced the soil?

We have no reported it yet, no. I’ve always been told you don’t/shouldn’t repot new plants and to wait a year or two. Sounds like it might be time to move it to a different, non self watering pot!

I have had plants I repotted immediately and others I’ve had over two years and not repotted. Depends on the plant and the soil. The greenhouse that potted it up doesn’t necessarily set you up for success. And sometimes their product sits on their own shelves for a while, reducing the time you can expect on your end.

The nursery I’ve gotten the majority of my other plants from seems to really do a good job and always gives me great advice. But this one was bought online in the pot so that’s why I never thought of messing with it til now. Shoulda known just cause it’s sold that way doesn’t mean it’s the best option

This is my Money Tree. It’s in a growers pot inside another pot. I pull the growers pot out once per week and soak it real well then put it back in the other pot. He’s a little short right now because I took off the top foot to start another tree (2nd time).

Beautiful!! If mine had come in a grower pot that’s exactly what I would have done!

Do you think it may have outgrown the pot?

I was actually wondering that but the woman who commented before you said I should put it in a small pot LOL so idk! It does seem it needs to be removed from the self watering pot, and I have one of similar size with drainage holes that I’ll probably use :)

If you have a Lowe’s or Home Depot near you, go buy a growers pot that will fit inside the pot it’s in. They cost less than $5. Transplant to the growers pot and sit it inside the self-watering pot. Then you can lift it out and water it in the sink.
