# Never had this problem before, but what do you do about your cats…

_Posted by Miranda on 2024-01-01_

Never had this problem before, but what do you do about your cats getting into your plants. My kitten has chewed off two leaves of my one string pothos… she is so good and then all of a sudden she acts so bad and chews. I am not in a position where I can hang it nor move it to another location due to not having enough light in other rooms. Any ideas?

Our two cats stopped eating the plants entirely once we planted some cat grass and let them eat that! Ours don’t like eating it out of the pot so we pick a good few out and give it to them once or twice a day

I have a cat that does the same thing except to my spider plant! I’ve heard people say to get cat grass or like catnip so they can safely chew on it, or like me just have a plant a sacrificial plant they can nibble on that’s not toxic to them. They love my spider plant bc it gets them kinda high but it’s not toxic. I also keep my toxic plants behind a glass case so they still are able to get adequate light and you can still look at them and not have to worry about your cat accidentally getting into them!

When cats chew spider plant they get a mild high- your cat is an addict 😔

That’s not true at all! Spider plants are non-toxic to cats.

Ironically enough she doesn’t eat any of my plants… she just bites down to destroy the plant and then moves on. She has not consumed anything

I have a cat and I have plants so this is the method I’ve used to deter kitty away from them. 1) I only buy non-toxic plants so if kitty chews he won’t get sick. 2) I spray kitty with water when I catch him chewing my plants. This breaks the cycle of bad behaviour and he learnt very quickly. 3) I purchase non dangly plants like string of hearts for eg and I buy foliage plants with big leaves. Kitty isn’t interested in the big leaves so it’s a win-win. Hope this helps 😊🌿

I know you said you can’t hang it but can’t you get a stand so it is elevated and out of reach?
