# When I first started in the hobby a couple years ago, I paid top…

When I first started in the hobby a couple years ago, I paid top dollar for this monstera deliciosa albo as a small rooted cutting. It is about 2’ tall now and a new leaf is coming soon as you can see. It’s one single tall stem. My concern is that I’d like it to be more bushy and full, not long like it is. Plus the lower leaves are ugly and have had to be trimmed due to browning of the white. This plant likes to throw half moons. Would you prune and propagate this and replant in the pot? Would you do two cuttings, top and middle? Or simply chop it in half and prop the top to replant in the pot. Any advice greatly appreciated. I would wait and do this probably in March.

If you’re waiting to do cuts in March- my suggestion is air layer every empty node. Should have some good roots by then. Then cut them when you’re ready… plant them all right back in the pot. 👍🏼

I do not know what air layering is. And I’m not that versed in plants. Should I just chop and prop now? I have read early spring is better. But the plant is in a grow light and humidifier situation now. East window.

Air layering is super easy. You can search videos on YouTube. You wrap damp spaghnum moss around the arial roots, and wrap that with Saran Wrap. The roots will grow over the next few months. Just keep the spag moist. Then cut when you’re ready.

do you add extra silica? there are many silica supplements available to help variegated plants maintain their white patches longer. i second the air layering suggestion also, this method encourages the plant to grow roots before you make the cut

I’ll have to look into that
